On October 16, 2013 the Canadian Parliament resumed after having been prorogued at Harper’s request last month in what was an obvious attempt to avoid dealing with the corruption scandals plaguing his government and the subsequent cover-up operations by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Canada Post has accelerated its drive in this regard since February 13, 2013 when it leaked a headline to CTV News “that sweeping cuts may be ahead for Canada Post as it faces a $327 million operating loss last year”. It was then reported that in order to stay afloat, Canada Post was considering reducing home delivery from five to four, or even three days, closing some of the 6,500 retail outlets across the country and consolidating the 21 sorting centres to just major cities, that is Winnipeg, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. Senior executives from Canada Post have been holding closed door consultations with business groups in cities across the country. Meetings were held in Calgary on September 11, 2013 and in Ottawa on September 12th. According to the corporation fifty such consultations are planned and each meeting is followed by a media blitz in each city. Instead of media relations representatives, senior vice-presidents of the corporation have been appearing on news programs and radio talk shows in one of the most aggressive campaigns undertaken by the corporation to promote the dismantling of the public post office and further attack the working conditions, wages and benefits (including pensions) of postal workers.
