A correction: Will the Internet Kill the Post Office?

***FULL DISLOSURE***

On December 15, 2013 I published a “meme” on facebook comparing mail volumes in 1988/89 with  the volumes in 2012. The figure used in the graphic for 2012 was incorrect.

computers kill the post office

The image above has been corrected to show 9.6 billion pieces of mail moved in 2012 instead of the incorrect number of 9.8 I published on December 15.

Both the 1989 number and the 2012 number were rounded to the nearest 100 million.

The 1989 number comes from a Fraser Institute report titled The Mail Monopoly published in 1990 which quotes the employer’s 1988/89 annual report. The report can be downloaded here. On page 115 of the report you can find the following table.

1989 mail volumesI took the 8,268 million figure from this table and rounded it up to 8.3 billion pieces.

The 2012 number comes from the employer’s annual report (financial) which can be viewed here. On page 59 of the report you can find the following table.

2012 mail volumes

I should have taken the 9,623 million figure from this table and rounded it down to 9.6 billion pieces. Somehow I ended up publishing the meme with the 9.8 billion figure in error.

I am not sure how this error occurred. I had a lot of documents opened on my screen at the time. Whether I was looking at another figure while editing the meme or it was a simple type-o, I got it wrong.

I apologize for any misunderstanding that my error has caused.

In solidarity,
Andy Henderson.

  1. I should also apologize for quoting ANYTHING from the Fraser Institute, but CPC’s older annual reports are very hard to find.

  2. I THINK THE POINT THAT YOU ARE MAKING IS NOT EFFECTED BY THE MINOR ERROR YOU MADE. I HAVE THE ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORTS AND YOUR FIGURES FOR BOTH 1988-1989 AND 2012 ARE CORRECT. IN COMPARISON, LETTER MAIL HAS DECLINED JUST BY AN INSIGNIFICANT AMOUNT IF COMPARED TO THE 1988-89 PERIOD WHILE ALL OTHER POSTAL VOLUMES HAVE INCREASED. THAT IS WHY IN MY WRITINGS, I REFER TO CANADA POST CREATING ‘HYSTERIA’ WHEN DEALING WITH THE QUESTION OF MAIL VOLUMES. NOTE THAT FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS, THE REVENUES HAVE NOT DECLINED ‘STEEPLY’ AS LISA RAITT PUTS IT BUT HAS RATHER STAYED STABLE AT 7.5 BILLION DOLLARS. WHAT CANADA POST HIS LOOKING AT, ITS DRIVE SO TO SPEAK, IS THE MAKING OF MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF CAPITALIST PROFITS AND THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED IN THE PAST TWO YEARS. IT IS THIS DRIVE WHICH IS SERVING AS THE IMPETUS FOR ALL THE CUTS AND DEMANDS FOR CONTRACT CONCESSIONS WHILE HIDING WRAPPED IN THE CLOTH OF FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY.

  3. For your information Andrew, you can obtain all financial reports going as far back as the Crown was established or any other material concerning Canada Post from the Secretariat Office of the CEO simply by writing and requesting the information. I will send you the address sometime over the week-end.
